About
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field that applies principles of engineering, science, and mathematics to medicine and biology to improve human health and healthcare delivery. By bridging the gap between engineering innovation, biomedical sciences, and clinical practice, the department engages in high-impact education, advanced research, and community service.
Our academic and research efforts focus on:
- Modeling Complex Biological Systems: Understanding and modeling anatomical and physiological phenomena that are non-linear, non-stationary, and complex.
- Biomedical Signal & Image Processing: Analyzing spatial and temporal data from the human body for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
- Physiological Measurements: Developing precise measurement techniques to assess physiological functions for clinical practice and scientific inquiry.
- Medical Device Innovation: Designing, optimizing, and evaluating biocompatible devices to diagnose, monitor, and treat clinical conditions effectively.
To address the regional demand for specialized biomedical expertise, the College of Engineering at the University of Duhok established the BME Department in close collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen (THM) in Giessen, Germany—specifically supported by Prof. Dr. Thomas Schanze and Prof. Dr. Martin Fiebich. This partnership was bolstered by a four-year German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) grant awarded in 2014, which facilitated faculty exchanges, joint workshops, and curriculum development. Further supported by the General Directorate of Duhok Health to ensure strong clinical ties, the department officially welcomed its first undergraduate cohort in the 2018–2019 academic year.
Today, the department has grown into a comprehensive academic center. Beyond its Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program, the department offers Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees, drives innovative research in healthcare technologies, and actively contributes to local society by supporting the healthcare sector in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Vision
The Biomedical Engineering Department will contribute significantly to the improvement of the medical services in Kurdistan region including the prophylactic, diagnostic, therapeutic capabilities so as to attain self-reliance in this field as well as preserving the cost of patient’s medical treatment that Kurdish people are spending outside the Kurdistan Region.
Mission
To graduate highly qualified Engineers in the biomedical engineering field; to apply engineering knowledge, design systems and equipment to solve and simplify biological and medical problems.
